2018 Rural Communities and Wildfire Risk Workshop

The Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DSHEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are holding a one-day (8 am to 5 pm) workshop with four Colorado counties (Park, Eagle, Jefferson, and Mineral) to explore land use solutions to mitigate the impacts of the wildfire hazards. The workshop will be a deep dive into the steps necessary to develop and adopt preventive mitigation actions. Utilizing DOLA’s Planning for Hazards Guide (planningforhazards.com), the workshop will assist teams from each county develop a roadmap to implementing a wildfire mitigation land use solution.

SPEAKERS

Tareq Wafaie, AICP-Principal, Clarion: Tareq Wafaie is a Principal in Clarion’s Denver office. His practice focuses on land use and zoning code diagnosis and reform, urban renewal, comprehensive planning, station-area planning, and natural hazard mitigation. Before joining Clarion, he was a development review planner, and spent two years providing technical assistance and training on land use issues to communities across Colorado. Mr. Wafaie is a frequent speaker at regional and national planning conferences on ethics, zoning, and hazard mitigation planning.

Molly Mowery, AICP-Owner, Wildfire Planning International LLC: Molly Mowery is a certified land use planner specialized in helping communities increase their resilience to wildfire. She has over fifteen years of experience working with communities on the challenges of sustainability, environmental planning and the wildland-urban interface. In her consulting practice, Molly manages a national wildfire planning assistance program, Community Planning Assistance for Wildfire, and is a director for the non-profit Community Wildfire Planning Center. She serves on multiple committees, including the Sustainable Development Code Advisory Council. Molly recently developed the first national Land Use Planning for Wildfire course for FEMA. Molly holds a Master’s degree in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
