EPP Committee Update

The Emerging Planning Professionals are in a period of transition! October 31 marks the last day of the current board that has been serving you for two years, and the beginning of the next generation of EPP board members!

We would like to thank and congratulate the outgoing board members for their contributions. Brad Boland has served as the communications char for two years and has been the primary point of contact for EPPers and responsible for promoting and marketing our monthly events. Notably, Brad coordinated closely with APA-CO communications chairs to integrate event calendars, activated the group’s Facebook page, and has played a key role in helping our membership grow by 114% over the last two years.

Lynn Coppedge has served as an event chair for the past two years. With her background and passion in sustainability, she has organized and led successful events such as an annual AICP trivia night, Municipal Water Panel discussion, resume workshop, Broadway Bike Lanes tour, Stanley Marketplace Tour, and a Resiliency and Emergency Management Panel Discussion. Lynn’s active leadership of the Events Chairs group has been instrumental in maintaining continuity and regular events for our members to attend and enjoy, shifting the group’s focus to professional development

Nate Shull has also served as an event chair for two years, joining at a time of transition from the inaugural board to the next iteration of this committee. Nate has been instrumental in organizing and visualizing a strategic plan, and conceptualizing event types for the events chairs to host. Events coordinated by Nate include: Train to the Plan – A Line Tour, Urban Scavenger Hunt in partnership with Downtown Denver Partnership, National Parks Planning Tour at Rocky Mountain National Park, and a resume workshop. With his professional move to Grand Lake, Nate will remain on the board as the organization’s first non-metro area representative and will be coordinating events in the North Central Metro/Mountain area!

Matt Jones and Daniel Hughes have been on the EPP board for over one year, and have co-hosted multiple events such as the Welcome to Colorado Planning discussion panel, R-Line Tour, and Marijuana Grow Facility Planning tour. Both of these gentlemen were instrumental in identifying locations, panel members, and updating ideas for implementation with the group.

And finally, Jonathan Cappelli served as co-chair for the past two years. His vision and big picture thinking allowed EPP to successfully focus on membership growth and making key connections to build relationships with outside organizations. Jonathan coordinated with Denver Does Design to co-host a Meet the Dark Side networking event with over 500 emerging professionals from 30 local design organizations such as AIA, ASLA, USGBC, and other professional organizations represented in Colorado.

Thank you to all the outgoing board members. We would like to also welcome the incoming board members:

  • Anthony Avery and Brandon Jensen will serve as co-chairs. While Anthony has served as co-chair for the past two years, Brandon brings experience from leading the student chapter at Missouri State University, and we’re excited to hand the reins off to him over the next year!
  • Mehgie Tabar and Amanda Kannard are this year’s communications chairs, and will be responsible for marketing events and communicating with EPP members.
  • Our events chairs this year will be Emily Alvarez, Brenden Paradies, and Katie Schwarz. Each brings experience and passion to the team in organizing activities and we’re excited to offer our membership events with a different focus from the past two years. Their different backgrounds are sure to open up more opportunities for more inclusive events, appealing to a larger segment of our membership!
  • Nate Shull, as was mentioned above is returning to the board as the committee’s first area representative. He will be coordinating closely with the committee to identify tools and strategies to open up other areas across the state for representatives to host their own events, creating a statewide network of peer support and engagement.
  • Laura Kraus will serve as the group’s first Special Projects Coordinator. She will be working closely with the EPP co-chairs and APA-CO’s Professional Development Officer to establish a mentorship program across the state by next summer!

Upcoming Events:

  • November 18, 2017, 3:30 – 5:00, Cranksgiving. We will be meeting at Denver Bicycle Café (1308 East 17th Avenue, Denver, CO 80218) to take off on bike to collect food and supplies for donation to Metro Caring. Please be ready to donate between $25-$30 in supplies as we race around the city grocery stores to collect our donations. Happy hour to follow at DBC!
  • December 15, 2017, 7:00 – Midnight, White Elephant Christmas Party. Anthony will be hosting the second annual EPP White Elephant Christmas Party in his building’s penthouse with a spectacular view of Downtown Denver. We’ll eat, drink, and exchange planning-related gifts white elephant style! Details will be posted to the group’s Facebook page including location, food, and beverage details as the date grows near.
