In Denver just a decade ago, the terms ADU (Additional Dwelling Unit), micro-apartment and tiny home, were not in the common urban lexicon. Today, city dwellers cannot talk about the future of Denver without these terms. Ironically, small footprint living is not a new invention in dwelling making; it is rather a reversal to pre Interstate America where living in density was a necessity.

This panel will explore the desirability of small footprint living, the impacts on the existing urban fabric, in particular on the historic context, and will discuss the proliferation of both ADUs and micro-apartments in the Denver Region. The panel will answer questions from the audience regarding technology, policy and development.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the historical context of small footprint homes
  2. Hear from architects about the best practice in small footprint design
  3. Explore ADUs with a Denver contractor who has built many and can speak to the challenges and opportunities they present
  4. A community member from the La Alma/Lincoln Park neighborhood will share their experience of living in small historic homes
