Come join us! The Summit County Colorado Planning Department is looking for a dynamic and experienced new member of our team. The position announcement is summarized below, and additional information is available on the County website at POSITION SUMMARY: The Planner I is responsible for planning functions and projects requiring a combination of skills in research, analysis, development review, public presentation, and interpretation of concepts and data pertaining to planning and implementation of the Summit County Land Use and Development Code and applicable master plans. Work is performed with general instructions from a supervisor with considerable latitude for independent initiative and judgment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES OF THE POSITION: A Planner 1 in the Planning Department is responsible for reviewing applications for development review to ensure conformance with the Summit County Land Use and Development Code while providing assistance to developers and the general public. During review, coordinate with other departments to ensure that conditions/stipulations are included and implemented. A Planner 1 attends Planning Commission meetings, Board of Adjustment meetings and Board of County Commissioner meetings as required to present land use applications. The Planner I will perform research, planning, and technical analysis of planning projects; respond to front desk public inquiries related to planning and zoning; review building and grading permits for residential structures; administer site plan review, sign permits, conditional use permits, subdivision and subdivision exemption plats, and other administrative reviews; serve in a coordinating role with other divisions, or outside department staff; communicate effectively with customers, clients, or the public in one-on-one settings or in group settings; and perform additional duties as assigned. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND FORMAL TRAINING: Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, geography, landscape architecture, architecture, or a closely related field. A Master’s degree in any of these fields is desired. AICP certification is also preferred. A Colorado Driver’s license is required at the time of appointment. At least one year of experience working in local or regional planning, long range planning and development review; or any equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible professional planning experience. Experience working with the public in difficult situations, a customer service orientation, and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing are a must.
