The Land Use Department is seeking a dynamic individual for a key Planner I position. This position reports to the Senior Planner on the Development Review Team. They will have the opportunity to review and contribute to planning projects in a fast paced and innovative environment. The position calls for dedicated commitment to the cornerstones of Boulder County governance as laid out by County Commissioner initiatives in 1) Public Service 2) Sustainability and 3) Collaboration.

Desired candidates have the ability to significantly contribute and support department efforts in implementation of the core values of the Boulder County Comprehensive Plan, namely in the areas of Site Plan Review and current planning. A successful candidate will be able to effectively navigate in a complex and decentralized organization, will possess strong relationship-building and organizational skills, as well as a strong base of site planning skills.

This is a full-time, benefited position with Boulder County. Work hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. The Planner I will work out of Boulder, CO. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is exempt from overtime.

Hiring salary: $4,080 per month
Full salary range: $4,080 to $5,878 per month



  1. Provide information and assistance to developers, designers, and the public regarding planning related matters and the Land Use Code
  2. Review development proposals, and prepare and present staff recommendations
  3. Conduct pre-application meetings with applicants to explain land use regulations and review processes
  4. Review building permits and coordinate with building division staff
  5. Prepare maps and presentations, and conduct in-depth property research
  6. Perform other related duties, as required
  7. May be reassigned during emergency situations

  • A bachelor's degree in planning, or related field
  • At least one year of professional experience in urban, rural, regional, or community planning, or related field
Additional related education may count towards required experience


  • A job offer is contingent on passing a criminal background investigation
  • Employee must have a valid driver's license, current automobile insurance, and a good driving record


  • The ability to relate well to all kinds of individuals at all levels within the organization and outside the organization
  • The ability to deal tactfully in contentious situations
  • The human relations and interpersonal skills to adapt to diverse personalities and styles, facilitate group discussions and make formal presentations
  • The composure to be cool under pressure
  • The ability to learn quickly, apply creativity, understand complex processes and procedures, prioritize workload, set and meet deadlines, and perform well with minimal direct supervision
  • The ability to effectively cope with change, shift gears comfortably, and handle risk and uncertainty
  • Must be action-oriented, full of energy for challenging tasks, and enjoy working hard
  • A design background with experience in site plan review, environmental analysis, or landscape architecture is preferred. GIS capabilities preferred
  • A desire to serve the public is a must
