Under the direct supervision of the Principal Planner, or other professional planning staff as assigned, the Planning Intern assists in the activities associated with various aspects of the City’s planning program such as the development of a new Comprehensive Plan and other long-range planning and special studies.

  • Assists professional staff with research, data collection, trends analysis, graphic design, report preparation, and public engagement.
  • Participates or assists in meetings with stakeholders, study committees, and other government agencies.
  • Assists professional staff in the management, supervision and review of products from consultant teams assigned to the various projects.
  • Assists professional staff with various administrative tasks in support of the long-range planning initiatives, including document management, preparation of meeting materials, organizing internal and external meetings, and responding to public inquires for information.
  • Attends meetings and supports presentations to various boards, commissions, and City Council.
  • Performs customer service duties as needed; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Requires knowledge of the planning process including comprehensive planning theory and principles, transportation planning, urban design, community engagement, and demographic and statistical analysis.  Requires knowledge of planning law, zoning and subdivision regulations.
  • Ability to carry planning assignments to completion; analyze and systematically compile technical and statistical information; read and interpret plans, regulations, maps, and written communication; operate personal computer and various software.
  • Ability to obtain information and utilize this information to prepare written documents that are clear, concise, courteous, and within accepted grammatical standards.
  • Ability to use and apply technology.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships; communicate effectively, orally, written and graphically.


  • Individuals must be a recent college or graduate students who are obtaining degrees in the following disciplines:  Planning, Community Development, Public Administration, Urban Geography, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or related field.
  • Knowledge of basic graphics, cartography and data management programs, with the requisite skills and the ability to develop basic maps and exhibits. Experience with ArcGIS, graphic design, and/or desktop publishing software is preferred.
  • Requires an equivalent combination of education, training, or work experience that produces the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.


Physical Demands

Primarily sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 20 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment; vision for reading, recording and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in an office setting with in-person and telephone contacts and may involve frequent interruptions.  Work may require attendance at evening or weekend meetings.  

Must be able to perform the essential functions of this job, with or without accommodation.

Equipment Used/Required

Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers, calculators and copy/fax machines.
