Job Description

The city is looking for an enthusiastic planning intern for the summer to join the planning team working on the Comprehensive Plan rewrite! This position is open to existing students or a recent graduates. WORK HOURS: 20 HOURS/WEEK SUMMER 2018 Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of tasks within their assigned work area within the Policy Planning Division for the city of Thornton. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from Intern II or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience. Intern II: This is the intermediate-level class in the Intern series. Must be currently pursuing Bachelor's degree. Intern III: This is the journey-level class in the Intern series. Must be currently pursuing a Master's degree or a recent graduate. (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.) Provides staff support related to planning projects within their work area. Completes assigned research projects, in a timely manner and with required documentation. Compiles data and demographic analysis. Strong data skills preferable. Operates office equipment such as copy machines, calculators and computer software to produce end reports and copies. Performs other duties as assigned. Education/Experience: Experience in Word, Excel, InDesign and basic computer mapping and graphic skills preferred. Intern II: High school diploma or GED plus six months' experience in specific department or progress toward completion of a Bachelor's degree in Planning, Land Use or Urban Design. Intern III: Bachelor's degree plus one year of experience in specific department or progress toward completion of a Master's degree in Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Public Administration or similar fields. Licensing/Certification Requirements: Valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record may be required. Your application will be used as a screening tool.
