Job Description

ERM is seeking a qualified Senior Project Manager / Environmental Permitting Specialist in our Denver, CO office to provide project management for environmental compliance and permitting related projects for federal, state, and local government, and mining clients, particularly within the following western U.S. States: Montana, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho. In this role, you will coordinate with clients, regulatory agencies, and technical staff to develop sound approaches for environmental permitting and compliance and lead teams in preparing environmental documents, alternatives development and feasibility studies, supporting technical studies, and permit application packages for land use planning projects.   • Lead coordination and provide strategic consultation and guidance for various projects and programs in energy and natural resources industries.
  • Schedule and conduct environmental field investigations including biological surveys, plans and studies related to various environmental projects and programs such as baseline studies, compliance monitoring, mitigation programs, and impact assessments.
  • Compile project information and prepare reports; maintain project records and files as required.
  • Translate scientific studies and regulatory context into analyzing effects and determining avoidance, minimization, and mitigation measures toward a better project for the client and the environment through legally defensible documentation
  • Represent client interests to state and federal agency personnel. Lead agency negotiations and facilitate permit applications through constructive and collaborative agency relationships and communications.
  • Mentor junior- and mid-level consulting staff to develop their skill sets
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with other ERM employees.
  • Prepare technical proposals, including development of technical scopes and cost estimates, and participate in business development with existing clients and identified leads. Maintain client relationships to support repeat business.


  • BA or BS in related discipline; MS preferred.
  • 8 to12 years of experience working in biological resources, wetlands, and the regulatory permitting arena with experience in environmental consulting
  •  Preferred candidate will have a strong background and experience in state and federal projects involving mining, commercial and residential development, energy, land management planning, monitoring, and restoration  Prior experience developing mitigation strategies and leading negotiations with permitting agencies is a requirement
  • An ideal candidate must possess effective leadership, problem-solving ability, and exceptional writing and editing capabilities. Experience effectively managing regulatory permitting schedules and tasks as well as project contracts and budgets is required. Strong knowledge of and experience with NEPA compliance is also required. This role requires the initiative, confidence and strong work-ethic and to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary, team environment.
  • Candidate should be able to demonstrate experience in leading complex regulatory strategies as well as leading teams preparing applications and documents for permits and approvals for US Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management and US Forest Service, and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to lead a large multi-disciplinary team 
  • Strong environmental and business ethics, and a leadership style that instills these values in project teams
  • Excellent organization, schedule, and budget management skills
  • Strong work ethic with a positive attitude and commitment to producing quality work
  • General approach to the job as a mentor and model for project team leadership
  • Manage for the success of both individual projects and the long-term portfolio of many individual projects for a client
  • Interpret agency policy and position on key projects and issues to help position ERM for future opportunities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
