Job Description

Phelps Engineering is actively searching for an Urban Designer/Associate Planner/Landscape Designer to join their land development consulting firm in Denver, CO. Candidates will have amazing layout/design and related technical skills that combine with a diverse knowledge of planning principles and practices. Candidates will also be able to combine innovative thinking, artistic/creative flair and imaginative problem-solving skills to bring contextual and place-based inspiration to projects.

This position primarily reports to the Senior Planner and periodically to Phelps’ project manager and/or Senior Engineer. This position is responsible for working collectively with our design team in a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: assisting with research and analysis efforts; establishment of project vision, project programming, development intensity/layout and design (yield studies/analyses); any graphic work needed for development plans; generation of detail site planning and urban design concepts and concept development (in 2D and 3D); preparation of deliverables.


  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in urban design, planning or landscape design;
  • Demonstrates general knowledge of urban design and planning, urban history and theory, basic planning/entitlement law, and private and public development;
  • Works under the guidance of senior planner, project manager, and/or team to conduct research; create and modify plans, diagrams, renderings, maps, drawings, reports, and presentations as directed by others; visually communicate project content; write text for project reports, presentations, and other written work products;
  • Strong interpersonal hand and digital graphics, and written communication skills;
  • Assists senior planner/project manager to develop planning and design alternatives and layouts;
  • Demonstrated experience with AutoCAD, GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office. SketchUp experience is highly desired;
  • Works on several projects or issues simultaneously;
  • Works independently or in a team environment as needed;
  • Attends to details while keeping big-picture goals in mind;
  • Checks own work prior to review by others;
  • Other duties as assigned;
  • Masters preferred but not necessary. AICP or licenses in engineering or landscape design also preferred but not necessary for hiring. Goal to one day achieve professional status is highly desired;
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn and/or be mentored a must. Candidates who are avant-gardist/noncooperative need not apply.
