Denver's Parks Planning division consists of a team of highly-knowledgeable professionals dedicated to the development and improvement of the City & County of Denver's network of parks and parkways. The Parks Planning division's efforts in planning, design and construction management ensure that Denver's valuable system of parks foster's Denver's development as a world-class city and enriches the lives of Denver's citizens and guests for years to come.
 

Denver has over 5,000 acres of traditional parks and parkways which include 2,500 urban natural acres, over 300 acres of parks designated Rivers & Trails and an additional 14,000 acres of spectacular mountain parks. About Our Job

The West Denver Park District Planner will develop, implement and manage parks planning initiatives to ensure that city, departmental, and division goals are met. This position will be responsible for projects and needs within the West Denver district.  This is an exciting opportunity for a planning professional to be an integral force in many significant projects that will positively impact the community for years to come.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leads and manages planning and design projects, programs and policies including management of scope, schedule and budget on assigned projects
  • Coordinates and facilitates public participation in multiple stages of project planning through community outreach and engagement, public presentations and meetings; ensures adequate stakeholder involvement including collaboration with park maintenance operations staff and others
  • Attends and leads public meetings and events throughout Denver, some of which are held in the evening hours or on weekends, and conducts park site visits, as needed
  • Ensures efficient use of resources, adherence to plans, compliance with city standards and regulations and quality assurance
  • Provides timely and accurate reporting on project progress and addresses any project issues in coordination with internal staff or the public
  • Uses appropriate planning methodology and subject matter expertise to provide technical guidance and decision-making to assigned projects; completes intra-departmental plan review and recommendations on a variety of project initiatives
  • Prepares planning strategies and initiatives aligned with the mission, vision and values of the department and city
  • Coordinates ongoing annual planning efforts for Capital Improvement Projects (CIP)
  • Conducts research and analysis to determine the needs of the community and inform strategic responses
  • Demonstrates agility with work demands and shows initiative in proactively addressing needs and prioritizing
  • Identifies and fosters potential partnerships between the department and other interest groups, internal and external; cultivates and supports efforts to secure grants and other project funding
  • Builds consensus and support for initiatives and brings stakeholders together who have opposing views and interests to successfully complete projects.

About You

We are looking for a highly-motivated and organized planning professional who has superior relationship-building and communication skills.  Additionally, the incumbent will need to be agile in response to demands and possess creative problem-solving skills.  This position will require someone who is sensitive to equity considerations and is confident in their ability to work both cooperatively and independently.  Additionally, our ideal candidate will possess the following: 
  • Professional experience performing project planning and design for parks and recreational amenities
  • Experience coordinating and implementing all stages of public participation and collaboration in planning and design
  • Experience working with diverse communities developing trusting, collaborative relationships with key community stakeholders
  • Experience conducting research and analysis to determine community needs regarding planning and design efforts
  • AICP Certification
  • Master's Degree or higher in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Project Management or directly related field
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish highly preferred)

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Engineering, Project Management, Planning or a related field
  • Two years of professional project management experience in the related occupational group including coordinating, administering, and monitoring projects
  • A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements.  In the Engineering and Science Occupational Group, two years of experience at the type and level of Project Inspector may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement. 
  • By position, requires a valid driver's license.

Classification Title: We call this job a West Denver District Park Planner. The official job classification title is Project Manager I.
Hiring Range:  $72,414.00 - 94,138.00
Assessments/Testing: This position does not require testing.
