Job Description

The City of Aspen is seeking a Zoning Administrator to lead the dynamic zoning function of the Community Development Department.  This is a new position.  The full posting can be found at www.CityofAspen.com. Apply by February 2nd!

 

Position Summary: Manages and serves as the primary authority on zoning and administration of the City of Aspen zoning code.  The responsibilities are broad in scope, encompassing a wide variety of activities requiring rapid shifts in priorities.  This position requires confidence, independent action, initiative, a sense of urgency, and the ability to make decisions and take responsibility for them. A well-suited candidate can react and adjust quickly to changing conditions and come up with practical ideas for dealing with them.  The position requires a self-disciplined person who can handle details as well as manage the overall big picture of the zoning function in the City. There is a strong demand for high quality, organized and repeatable results.

 

Supervision Exercised and Received:  Works under the general direction of the Community Development Director, and reports to the Deputy Planning Director or Principal Long Range Planner.  This position supervises the City’s Zoning Enforcement Officers.

 

Typical day to day opportunities:

  • Create and implement the zoning function’s work program, including but not limited to: business process innovations; queue management; coordination with other core review agencies, including Building and Engineering; pre-application zoning services for customers; and continuing education and new employee training.
  • Champion continuous improvement, including devising new strategies and new opportunities within the team to support the development review and zoning function.
  • Develop and implement performance metrics for the zoning function, including measures for customer satisfaction, staff workload, error-free performance, on-time reviews, etc.
  • Act as liaison to the Community Development Department management team regarding the zoning function and overall management of the department. 
  • Develop goals, objectives, policies and priorities that foster engagement and professional growth for the zoning team.
  • Regularly interact and build relations with development services staff and with our customers, including owners, consultants, and developers.

 

Ideal candidate has:

  • Experience that demonstrates a multi-disciplinary approach to community and land use planning and development.
  • Project management skills and experience are preferred. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communications, especially with technical subject matter.
  • Working knowledge of zoning regulations.
  • Four+  years of professional level experience in community, city, regional, or infrastructure planning, zoning, or similar experience.
  • Previous supervisory or senior level experience within municipal government Zoning/Planning.
