Outstanding Planning Project – Merit: El Paso County Parks Master Plan

The purpose of the project was to update the El Paso County Parks Master Plan, last updated in 2005. The Master Plan is an important document and element of the overarching County Master Plan that guides planning and development of parks, trails and open space. It is also used in the development application review process to ensure that developers contribute to an orderly system of recreation and open space facilities, and provide appropriate dedications of land, easements and fees.

Sustainability and Environmental Planning – Merit: Bucking Horse Ranch

Bucking Horse is an infill, mixed-use neighborhood on 160 acres located in Fort Collins, Colorado. The goal of the project is to “buck” the system and demonstrate a financially successful, agriculture- oriented neighborhood centered on the values of community and quality of life. This new neighborhood will promote a triple bottom line of sustainability considering environmental, social and financial outcomes.

Small Budget – Merit: Sonoran Institute

Twenty years of working with communities to advance conservation and smart growth has taught us that success is not random. It relies on effective local leadership and community capacity. The Community Development Academy (CDA) training program helps local leaders develop the skills and knowledge to assess challenges and opportunities, weigh options, guide the community through challenging issues, and make sound decisions for the future.

APA Colorado Website Re-Design

We are pleased to be launching a revamped, up-to-date website which will function as the communication hub for the APA Colorado Chapter and its members! In the Fall of 2012, we asked you, our members, to provide feedback on how we can best meet your communication and information sharing needs to provide you the best member services we can! We have heard your responses and the new website will not only have the functionality to allow communication between the Chapter and you the members but also the ability for you to communicate with your colleagues and provide a forum where you can share ideas and collaborate quickly and easily.

Update From the Professional Development Committee

This year’s annual conference was among the many success stories in 2013 for APA Colorado and its members. I would like to thank the former Professional Development Officer, Abby Shannon, AICP for her hard work and dedication serving the APA Colorado members and leading the Professional Development Committee. She and the committee (among others) worked tirelessly to ensure that the Chapter’s educational events, including the annual conference, served the training needs for APA Colorado’s membership.

Student Chapter Update

The APA Colorado 2013 Annual Conference drew over 40 students throughout Colorado to the scenic and beautiful City of Vail this past October. Among these students a variety of planning disciplines were present from Urban Planning to Environmental Design. Students took this opportunity to further explore the planning profession as a multi-disciplined profession while learning of various planning efforts occurring throughout Colorado so they may grow both professionally and personally as they continue with their educational goals.

Sustainability Update: What’s in Your Backyard? Planning for Local Urban Agriculture

On September 19, 2013, the APA Colorado Sustainability Committee held an urban agriculture-themed meeting titled What’s in Your Backyard? The three-part event included a workshop that consisted of a discussion of conducting food systems assessments, and planning efforts, zoning ordinances, and local advocacy planning. Next there was a tour of Five Fridges Farm with owner Amanda Weaver, and finally a social hour at Colorado Plus Brew Pub. Overall, we learned about the policies and hard work it takes to support local agriculture.

Chapter Administrator Update

2013 is closed and we’re starting to look forward and plan for 2014. With the launch of our new website, we have the opportunity to better distribute information to our members and to promote our organization as a whole. I hope you’ve taken the time to visit the website since the launch in November and like what you see. Our goal is to make it the hub of all things APA Colorado.
