CWPC - Land Use Planning Approaches in the WUI Colorado Update

Earlier this year, our non-profit organization Community Wildfire Planning Center (CWPC) released a report “Land Use Planning Approaches in the Wildland-Urban Interface”. We are excited to share that we recently updated this report with a Colorado addendum to explore the connection between county master plan policies for wildfire and local WUI risk.

We wanted to see how many counties in Colorado voluntarily address wildfire in their master plan since they are not currently required to do so per state statute. Our research found that many counties with moderate or higher WUI risk are not considering wildfire hazard in their master plan in a meaningful way. Based on our experience in working with communities across the U.S., we believe this creates a significant gap in the long-term planning process to keep communities safe and resilient. We also provide several recommendations in our report to help address this challenge.

Please reach out with any follow up questions, and feel free to share this research with others who may be interested.
