President's Message: Economic Sustainable Tourism

So exactly what is economically sustainable tourism? Without wanting to pre-empt any of the articles here, let me offer some thoughts. Read the APA Colorado President's perspective.

Creating a Sustainable Tourist Economy beyond the Peak Season

All too often many of Colorado’s small communities are reliant on economic fluctuations which planners cannot change. These forces include weather, snow pack, and the global tourism economy. Michael will describe how Salida, a mountain community reliant on summer tourism and recreation continually creates and maintains their economy.

Sustainable Planning; Sustainable Infrastructure Assessments, a United States Air Force Led Initiative

Beginning in 2011, Sustainable Infrastructure Assessments (SIA’s) are being conducted across the United States Air Force Enterprise at installations in Colorado and worldwide. SIA’s consist of six types of assessments or audits for Air Force facilities: 1) Real Property Inventory, 2) Space Utilization to ensure facilities are optimized and properly configured for efficient operations, 3) Energy and Water conservation opportunities, 4) High Performance Sustainable Building (HPSB) audits identifying requirements to elevate the level of building performance 5) Facility Condition assessments (FCA’s) to determine sustainment, restoration, and modernization requirements, 6) Real Property Installed Equipment Inventory to determine maintenance and replacement requirements of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment.

Kim Langmaid, Director of Sustainability and Stewardship at Walking Mountains Science Center and a member of the Environment Committee of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, describes the “Actively Green 2015” efforts in the Vail Valley can further the efforts to spawn local innovation and leave a long-term legacy that benefits the entire community.
